The website for everyone in the Old Aberdeen community

1st January, 2012
Well, a New Year is upon us and hope we will start to see things happen within this period.
Aberdeen Council has been successful in their application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant to support the restoration of Duthie Park, so it looks like this work will be going ahead this coming year. I've no idea how the Council is funding this as they will have to find considerable amounts of money as well. While this is not the sort of improvements most of us have in mind for Seaton Park, it does show that there are possibilities out there - just hope there will still be some money left!
A small leaflet has been created by the City Council to describe the proposed Duthie Park refurbishment and you can find this here.

Well, in November we had a bit of a scare in that we found out that the Council was finding it necessary to find further cost savings, over and above those secured at the beginning of the year.
The Council followed the same process as they did earlier, by identifying various options then ranking them.
We found out that one of the options on the table was the closure of all public gardens, well, at least those that they could legally close. Seaton Park was on that list.
Well, since then, the relevant Committee has considered the options and excluded the closure of any parks. While this has to be ratified by the full Council, it does seem likely that the park are not under immediate danger, but this is not yet final.
Whatever the outcome, Seaton Park is still the Cinderella park in Aberdeen and could do with a lot more focus. The Old Aberdeen Community Council is therefore hoping to support the formation of a ‘Friends’ group to provide a vehicle for putting pressure on the Council
There is more on this in the December newsletter.
We ask you to register your interest in supporting the Park and have created a Facebook page at ‘Seaton Park Friends’ or you could email us at seatonpark@oldaberdeen.org.uk. We hope to get serious on this in spring, once the weather has improved and we can feel interested in gardens again, but do make contact now so we can keep you updated as things progress.

Do you know that the City Council, in the midst of cuts to all the essential services around Aberdeen and causing all kinds of suffering and difficulty, is actually proposing to spend £2 million pounds (from the Common Good Fund) as part of an effort to redevelop Duthie Park in the style of the garden in Victorian days.
Meanwhile, Seaton Park is lucky if the council will agree to buy them a box of bedding plants.
Tell your Councillor what you think about their priorities.

There are efforts being made to secure funds to rejuvenate Seaton Park.
If this becomes a reality, we will keep you up to date on developments on this page
