Sunnybank Park at risk

Aberdeen City Council has recently mothballed the bowling greens and pavilion in Sunnybank Park (the St Machar Outdoor Centre). and says that the sports facilities are “surplus to requirements”. This seems a great loss to the area.

6 months to develop a plan!

The council today agreed at the meeting of its Finance and Resources Committee to accept the recommendations in its report on the 'St Machar Outdoor Centre' and allow the Sunnybank community a six-month "window of opportunity" to draw together a community action plan for Sunnybank Park, as it's better known locally.

Old Aberdeen Community Council has helped set up a steering group which will now develop a business plan with the intent of retaining the park, with possible long term input to its management. The steering group will include other interested people from outside the Old Aberdeen catchment area -  members from the Froghall / Powis / Sunnybank Key Contacts Group.  We have a note of all the ideas sent in on the questionnaires and we will be getting in touch with all those of you who have already indicated a willingness to help. If you were missed out on the questionnaire but would like to help, drop a line to sunnybank@oldaberdeen.org.uk.

5th November

Hooray!!  (almost)

It has been proposed that the community should be given a 6 month window to develop ideas and finance for keeping the park running.  Here’s a copy of the draft council report that makes this recommendation. This will be discussed and hopefully approved at a City Council meeting next Thursday 12th.

A big thank you to all those who contributed to the questionnaire - you did make a difference.

Here is a map of the area that is being discussed

21st September

Sorry about the delay but here is the summary of the results from the Questionnaire about how the community would like Sunnybank Park to be used.

DOCUMENT

This was passed to every Councillor who took part in the Finance & Resources Committee  meeting on 17th September.  Nevertheless, the Committee appears to have resolved to take the site to the market.  In other words, flog it off for cash.

As the site is designated green space, they will have to change its designation first. The OACC is trying to find out how they can do that, and what their plans are. We feel it is criminal to sell of  green spaces, which it will be impossible ever to recreate. Do tell your Councillor what you think about this, and do this as soon as possible as a meeting on 27th October will be discussion the land use aspect of this issue.

Contact details for Councillors Robertson, Noble and Collie are available on the 'local representatives' page of this web site.

There will be a meeting of the Sunnybank Park action group (still informal at present) next Tuesday. We will continue to keep you up to date on these pages.

Unfortunately, I have just heard that a vandal has started a fire in the pavilion.  This is likely to make things a lot harder for us.

8th September 2009

Questionnaire has now been closed and response collated.  A letter has been sent to the appropriate committee members who will be considering the fate of this park. I promised to publish the response here by the 11th, but I am presently out of the country. I will try and get this sorted.  The response was pretty good with a lot of good ideas.

Aberdeen City Council has recently mothballed the bowling greens and pavilion in Sunnybank Park (the St Machar Outdoor Centre). and says that the sports facilities are “surplus to requirements”. This seems a great loss to the area.  The park’s future will be discussed by the City Council on September 17th, so it is important that we make the community’s views known. We want to know your thoughts on the park, how you currently use it, how it might be better developed to increase use by the surrounding communities so we can try to influence the outcome of the Council meeting.
