The Third Don Crossing.

Well, despite the last attempt at rejecting the Third Don Crossing bridge from Bridge of Don into Tillydrone, the City Council is not letting it go and have put out their plans for Access from the North’, which, surprise, includes the new bridge.  We will keep you up to date on this page with any developments we hear about, and see also the Don Crossing Communities Alliance website at  www.donsidecommunities.com

Third Don Crossing - "A Bridge to Nowhere"

Aberdeen City Council plans for a Third Don Crossing were passed at a Full Council Meeting on the 23rd of February.

This planning application was launched in November 2009 and attracted 660 letters of objection. As a result of these objections there was a public planning hearing where many individuals and groups including Old Aberdeen Community Council made representations arguing against a bridge at this location (Tillydrone to Grandholm).

Having heard our objections our councillors failed to listen and now propose in their wisdom to build this bridge even though over 300 people will have to be served with compulsory purchase orders.

There is however one problem for the developer (Aberdeen City Council) - they don't have any money to pay for the bridge. Due to this lack of funding our council are at present attempting to encourage Scottish Government to fund this bridge in conjunction with the Western Peripheral Route (WPR). These were two separate planning proposals. The aim of the WPR was to reduce traffic in the city centre by routing it around the outskirts. The Third Don Crossing will encourage more cars to cut through the city centre. The logic involved to tie these two separate projects with divergent aims together is flawed however I'm sure this will not stop our present local councillors who seem to pay heed to the will of developers and not their electorate.

Please let your politicians (who will be knocking on your door soon looking for your votes) know that this is a bridge we in Central Aberdeen do not want & we don't want Scottish Government to fund it.   G.M.

9th October, 2010

A date has been set for a  public hearing, but it is 14th December, just when everyone is busy getting organised for Christmas.  Is this deliberate?

29th May 2010

The Don Crossing Communities Alliance, a grouping of the affected Community Councils who object to the 3rd Don Crossing, have recently set up a website which outlines why we are opposed to the City Council’s 3rd Don Crossing proposals.

Please visit the website - www.donsidecommunities.com

Have a look and if you feel that you agree with what we stand for and why we oppose the proposals, please sign our e-objection. All that is required is for you to provide your name and your email address, and the rest is done for you. It will be sent automatically to the case officer Lucy Greene at Aberdeen City Council.

This really is the wrong proposal. All it will do is push traffic congestion further into the city, increase air and noise pollution for communities from Bridge of Don to Rosemount, and destroy a mature and highly complex eco-system at the river Don, threatening protected species of wildlife.

Please support this protest if you can.

As well as signing the protest, why not email or write to your local councillor as well.  Remember to always give you name and address, otherwise your comments will be ignored.

19th May 2010

Sorry, forgot to update you.

The environmental statement is now in place and we have a date for final comments - 10th June.

Application reference is 100135 and you can download lots of stuff to read.

The OACC has objected on lots of grounds, but primarily that there is no plan to deal with the traffic once it arrives in St Machar Drive. We are supportive of the Tillydrone community who will be badly effected by this proposed new route and we consider that the City Council should be spending more time and effort encouraging public transport rather than easing car use.

30th April 2010

Well, nothing has happened so far as they forgot to include an Environmental Statement with their submission. This is now available, apparently, so we now enter the formal 28 days consultation period. To access the environmental statement, and the maps and other comments, go to:

http://planning.aberdeencity.gov.uk/planningsearch.asp

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, click
 ‘
I understand’ to accept the terms and conditions, then enter 100135 in the Reference Number box and click ‘Submit’.

Now click on the blue 100135 that appears in the summary of the application to get to the details page.

Scroll to the bottom of this page and you will find View Documents.  Yup, click on this.

Now you should get a whole list of stuff to look at. You can save or print this if you wish, but the plans need to printed on A3 or bigger to be readable.

3rd February 2010

The City Council has commenced the process of work on the third Don crossing by applying for planning permission to conduct detailed design for: -

“Construction of a new 2.4km long, generally 7.5m wide single carriageway wide road with associated footways, segregated cycleways, verges & earthworks, also clearance of some existing vegetation, trees and construction of a new bridge over the River Don, new pipe drainage, road signs, street lighting, landscaping and accommodation works.”

Details may be found on their web site at ;

http://planning.aberdeencity.gov.uk/PlanningDetail.asp?ref=100135

Application reference 100315.

They were a bit slow getting their plans onto the web, but they are now available, and it can be seen that the route is identical to that developed for the 2006 proposal.  Any objections must be sent to the council by the 19th February, which we feel is far too short for something as major as this.

No specific developments, currently, but the council officers are assuming that a third Don crossing is in the plan so will happen. Don’t know where they will get the money from....

Yup, everyone in the area told the council that we did not want the 3rd Don crossing - that it would wreck Tillydrone and Hayton, and it would just shovel more cars into central Aberdeen that can’t take any more. Well, they’ve now approved the building of thousands of more houses in Whitestripes and Grandholm, and they are about to come out, next week, with their proposals for the third Don crossing - and it will be just the same as last time. We’ll let you know of any developments as we hear them, so check back here frequently.
